OBR FestivalĀ is seeking visual artists for Feb 2016!

The One Billion Rising Festival is seeking visual artists to join their exhibition from 7th to 14th February 2016 at The Bread & Roses Theatre in Clapham.

With the first ever One Billion Rising Festival at The Bread & Roses Theatre in Clapham (South London, UK), we join the international OBR action with an eight day creative campaign, featuring performances, workshops, talks, exhibitions and more.

One Billion Rising is the biggest mass action to end violence against women in human history. The campaign, launched on Valentine’s Day 2012, began as a call to action based on the staggering UN statistic that 1 in 3 women on the planet will be beaten or raped during her lifetime. With the world population at 7 billion, this adds up to more than ONE BILLION WOMEN AND GIRLS. For three years - 2012 to 2015 - people across the world have come together on February 14th to express their outrage, strike, dance, drum and RISE in defiance of the injustices women suffer, by demanding an end at last to violence against women, accountability, justice and systematic CHANGE.

In 2016, the theme of Revolution continues with a call to focus on marginalised women and to bring national and international focus to their issues; to bring in new artistic energy; to amplify Revolution as a call for system change to end violence against women and girls; to call on people to rise for others, and not just for ourselves.

The OBR Festival at The Bread & Roses Theatre is set-out to reach out to and engage people on many different levels by offering a diverse line-up of events and creative activities.

We are now seeking visual artists to display their work around the theme of violence against women and girls during the festival. This can be both previous existing work, as well as art specifically inspired by the One Billion Rising Revolution campaign. If you would like to send us more details about your work and find out more please email [email protected] . Deadline is midnight on December 31st.

Several plays featured at the UNHEARD Festival in February 2015 have been invited to transfer to the Clear Lines Festival on July 31st! The Clear Lines Festival will bring together comedians, performers, journalists, writers, visual artists, musicians, cartoonists, psychologists, activists, therapists, and the public in a vibrant, funny, very human exploration of themes around sexual abuse, sexual violence, and consent. It will run at I'klectik (near Waterloo) from July 30th to August 2nd.

The plays from UNHEARD making up the festival's theatre night are:

  • Extracts from Doe by Rebecca Robinson
  • This is How It Happens by Tanaka Mhishi
  • Breathless by Samantha Coughlan
  • Everything’s Normal by Winnie M Li
  • Two Girls by Allie Costa

Whilst the exact line-up of actors and directors is still to be confirmed, as much of the original team as possible will be reprising their roles. As most events that these were a part of, at the UNHEARD Festival at The Bread & Roses Theatre in February, sold out, here's another chance to watch these important and relevant plays! More details and tickets will be available at clearlines.org.uk.
